We are pleased to offer ingrown and problematic toenail surgery at the BodiKind clinic in Crawley Down. We are easily accessible from Crawley, East Grinstead, Felbridge, Turners Hill, Copthorne and surrounding areas in West Sussex.
What is an ingrown toenail?
Ingrown toenails are most common on the big toe. They can grow into and pierce the skin at the sides of the nails. This can cause pain and swelling making the area red, hot, unsightly and more prone to infection.
What happens during the procedure?
Please book a consultation to discuss how we can manage your ingrown toenail. Surgery is not always required, as there may be an underlying reason which can be discussed.
Nail surgery is a minor surgical procedure to remove all or part of your toenail. It can be required for ingrowing toenails or other problematic nails. Local anaesthetic is injected into your toe making it numb, blocking all pain and sensation during the procedure.
The whole procedure generally takes an hour to complete, where the nail is removed (or part) and phenol may be applied to prevent the nail growing back. An antibacterial dressing is applied and this will be redressed at the clinic a couple of days after the procedure. After the surgery you will need to keep your foot elevated for a few hours and to rest. You can return to work or school the following day. Aftercare has to be undertaken in the first few weeks after surgery to help prevent infection and a dressing has to be worn.
Your BodiKind podiatrist will advise you to refrain from sports and running for at least two weeks. Healing time is dependant on your age and health, but it is generally 4 to 12 weeks.
Can other nails be treated surgically?
Yes we treat other types of problematic toenails, such as; fungal and thickened.
What about after the operation?
Afterwards, your toe will be sore but this should ease after a few days. It can also appear swollen and red. You will be required to attend the clinic after the procedure to have your toe redressed and allows us to monitor your healing. At the redressing appointments we will show you how to dress the toe at home and what to expect with the healing process.
Although your podiatrist will be experienced at performing this procedure, phenol treatment does not always work and your nail may grow again.
How much does the surgery cost?
One toe nail surgery package is £350, two toe nails surgery package is £395. This includes the surgery, dressings and follow up appointments. If you have health insurance this may be covered under your policy, please check with your provider.
At your consultation we will discuss the benefits, risks and answer any questions you may have.
